MOTS-c (mitochondrial open reading frame of the twelve S rRNA type-c) is a 16-residue peptide encoded by mitochondrial DNA. Published research investigates its role in AMPK activation, folate–methionine cycle intermediates, insulin sensitivity and skeletal-muscle glucose handling, which is why it is often described in the literature as an exercise-mimetic candidate.
